What is your organization’s role in the project? What unique contribution does it bring to the team? 

NEC Laboratories Europe brings system security expertise to the consortium, with the main role of leading the development of the Security and Trust Layer (Task T3.3), a vertical layer providing security services to the INCODE platform. On a technical level, NEC is designing a secure onboarding mechanism for IoT devices combining hardware-based attestation and blockchain technologies. Attestation forces each device to prove that its operating system and configurations are trustworthy, while the blockchain provides a tamper-resistant and highly available database for managing identities, attestation status, and metadata of the platform’s devices.

Why is this project important for your organization?  

This project is an opportunity for NEC to promote its leadership in blockchain technologies, as well as to consolidate its expertise in distributed ledger technologies and expand it towards the growing market of intelligent IoT-edge node applications. The research and development efforts invested in the project will enhance the company’s own security portfolio and contribute to the development and deployment of trustworthy, scalable, and effective management of networks and its services.
